Being a store house of macro- and micro-nutrients, banana is
a complete food in itself. A good sized banana has 116 kcal of energy, 70%
water, 27% carbohydrates, 1.2% protein, 0.45 fibre and 0.3% fat. Prominent
minerals of banana include phosphorous, potassium, calcium, iron and zinc.
Vitamins of B-group, A and C are also present in a fairly good amount in a
banana. Cholesterol and fat content is minimal.
But it has often come under fire – unjustly, for being a
high calorie snack. It contains a natural sugars which is easily digestible and
releases in blood stream quickly. This explains why many athletes, especially
tennis players, often eat banana before and in-between competition.
