    Muscle Cramping

Often times during a workout you will find yourself with a muscle cramp. Some people will tell you to work through it and others to take a break. So, what should a person do when they find themselves cramping up? First of all, to avoid cramping, be sure you are warming up and cooling down when working out, you body needs to stretch and be ready for higher intensity workout moves. Also, be sure you are hydrated, but it probably isn't best to take large gulps of very cold water before or during a workout, that could actually make things a little worse. Once the cramping starts, stop the activity you are engaged in and begin to massage or slowly stretch the area that is cramping. Sometimes it may help to hold the cramped area in a extended position to alleviate the pain. These simple things should help when your muscles cramp, but if yours seems severe or very persistent, don't hesitate to check with a doctor. It never hurts and you never know. I am sure others here might have more to add about muscle cramping, these are just things that I have learned from experience.

    Re: Muscle Cramping

I find that I get cramps in my side when I am walking at a faster than normal pace or doing something a little more intense than what my body is used to. I have always continued through it and wondered if I was doing the right thing or not. Maybe I will try what you suggest the next time it happens. I also wondered about electrolytes? One time a trainer at the local gym suggested depletion of those would cause cramping as well. Any idea?

    Re: Muscle Cramping

Buffy sometimes the cramping is a combination of things. Cramps during walking normally is a good sign that you have either not warmed up or you have not walked for a while. First, make sure as stated before, you warm up your muscles before walking. Second, build up to a faster pace. If you not have walked in a while, go at a slower pace and build up the speed and distance over a few days. As far as electrolytes, I have seen some suggestions of this but I think the jury is still out on solid research. I would suggest if you are not taking a good multivitamin than that is something you need to start right away. Eat more whole foods like fruit and veggies and whole grains. This should alleviate all of your walking cramps.
